FIA Motorsport Games: Saturday Round-up

VALENCIA, SPAIN (Saturday, October 26, 2024) – Spain leads the medal table following the penultimate day of competition at the 2024 FIA Motorsport Games after striking gold in Rally2 Tarmac and Rally4 Tarmac during a busy day in Valencia. Italy also added to its haul by triumphing in Rally Historic Tarmac. 

A further four categories were settled on Saturday. Karting Endurance staged its four-hour medal race at Aspar Circuit, where Belgium successfully defended its 2022 victory. GT gold went to Germany after a tense battle with the United Kingdom, while Brazil doubled up with wins in Esports GT and Esports F4. 

The event will conclude on Sunday, when a further 16 sets of medals will be decided. The closing ceremony will take place at 20:30 at the City of Arts & Sciences in Valencia. 

GT

Germany earned GT gold in a dramatic final contest. The United Kingdom took the chequered flag first, but a pair of track limits penalties meant the German-flagged Mercedes-AMG was a comfortable winner. Switzerland completed the podium after a final-lap pass on Spain.

Esports GT

Brazil scored its first-ever gold medal after an inspired performance by Igor De Oliveira Rodrigues, who capped a dominant event with a lights-to-flag victory. Germany and Czechia completed the podium. Brazil becomes the third different nation to celebrate Esports GT gold, while nine different nations have scooped awards across the three editions.

It may have waited three years for its first, but Team Brazil only had to wait a few minutes for its second FIA Motorsport Games gold medal as Luis Felipe de Sà Tavares completed a dream day for the nation.Team Czechia took second from Republic of South Korea, Netherlands and Singapore as four cars featured in a breathless finish for silver.

Karting Endurance

The four-hour Karting Endurance race at Aspar Circuit proved to be a memorable one as Belgium defended its FIA Motorsport Games crown. The trio of Strauven / Drion / Dessy took the chequered flag 16 seconds clear of the chasing pack, while Spain pipped the United Kingdom to silver by an incredible 0.064s.

Rally2

Alejandro Cachón and co-driver Borja Rozada’s supreme streak of stage wins continued throughout Saturday to earn the Spanish duo a gold medal in Rally2 Tarmac. The Toyota GR Yaris crew beat Türkiye’s Ali Türkkan / Oytun Albayrak, with Kenneth Madsen earning bronze for Denmark.

Rally4

Sergi Perez and co-driver Axel Coronado bagged their second gold medal of the 2024 FIA Motorsport Games by winning the Rally4 Tarmac class for Spain. The Netherlands picked up silver thanks to Nard Ippen / Jorie Christiaens, while René Noller / Tim Rauber took home bronze for Germany. The battle for the overall Rally4 win commences tomorrow at 17:05.

Historic Rally

Italy’s Andrea Zivian and co-driver Nicola Arena earned their third FIA Motorsport Games gold medal – and their second of the 2024 edition – by powering to victory in Historic Rally Tarmac. The Italian duo beat Antonio Sainz / Carlos Cancel (Spain) and Christer Hedlund / Ida Lidebjer-Granberg (Sweden) to the top step of the podium.

Drifting

The Semi-Final line-up for Drifting was set today at Circuit Ricardo Tormo. Joakim Andersson (Sweden) earned the best score with 93 points, narrowly beating Jakus Przygonski (Poland) and Koji Tada (Japan) to top spot. Tandem Practice runs tomorrow at 10:30, while the Top 32 and Final get underway at 14:15.

Touring Car

Argentina claimed victory in a dramatic Touring Car Qualifying Race. Ignacio Montenegro led from start to finish, but had to overcome a five-second penalty to narrowly secure the win over Spain and Czechia. Medals will be decided tomorrow morning, with the start scheduled for 09:35 CEST.

Formula 4

Spain secured pole position for tomorrow’s Formula 4 medal showdown with a hard-fought victory in this afternoon’s Qualifying Race. Juan Cota Alonso took the lead with a fast start from second on the grid, but was pushed hard during the latter stages by Peru’s Andres Cardenas. Sunday’s deciding contest begins at 12:10 CEST.

Single Make - Ferrari Challenge Trofeo Pirelli

The combined results from two Qualifying sessions put Team Spain’s Ivan Velasco Sanchez on pole for tomorrow’s Single Make GT race. He will start alongside James Owen (United Kingdom), while Angelo Carlo Fontana Oliviero (Venezuela) secured third spot. With the grid set, the Single Make GT field will reconvene for Sunday’s medal-deciding race at 13:45.

Auto Slalom

Slovakia, Germany, Israel and Estonia will battle for Auto Slalom gold after progressing through today's Eight-Final and Quarter-Final at Circuit Ricardo Tormo. The Semi-Finals will run tomorrow at 11:30, followed by the Small-Final to decide the bronze medal at 12:25 and the Final at 13:05

Germany, Hungary, Poland and the Netherlands will contest tomorrow’s deciding series of Auto Slalom match-ups following a busy day of competition at Circuit Ricardo Tormo. The Semi-Final runs at 09:15, followed by the bronze-deciding Small Final at 10:10 and the Final at 10:45.

A quartet of Karting Mini Heats ran at Aspar Circuit on Saturday. Portugal and the USA shared the victories in Group 1, while Bennet Korjus swept to a double win in Group 2. The 40-strong Karting Mini entry will complete their Heats on Sunday morning, with the Final due to take place at 13:05.

Karting Sprint Jnr 

Team Spain secured the opening Karting Sprint Junior Heat victory at Aspar Circuit. Bosco Arias kept his cool to lead from start to finish in a frenetic race, which began with a multi-kart pile-up that eliminated nine competitors. A final Heat will take place on Sunday at 10:20 before the all-important medal-deciding contest commences at 13:35.

Karting Sprint Sr

Team Spain doubled up in Karting Sprint Senior as Ruben Moya Lopez triumphed in both heats, much to the delight of a passionate home crowd. Czechia was runner-up in both, while Romania and Malta shared the third-place finishes. The final Karting Sprint Sr Heat will take place at 10:45 on Sunday, with the medal deciding finale set for 14:05.

Cross Car

Despite rain delays, there was plenty of Cross Car action at Aspar Circuit. In the Senior category, Sweden and France won Heats 1 and 2 respectively. Junior honours were split between Germany and Spain, while Czechia, Spain, Netherlands and Canada were on top in Mini. The Semi-Finals for all three are scheduled to begin at 11:00 on Sunday, followed by Finals for Mini at 14:30 and Senior and Junior at 15:00.
